FIVE FAVORITE RELEASES OF THE YEAR:
The Great Beauty – A
meditative waltz across religion, art, and the perpetually turning cogs of
social classes, only a cultural epicenter such as Rome could accompany an
eccentric’s intelligent criticisms as they shadow his emotional crisis of
existence.
Nightcrawler – With filthy acceleration, this twisted take on the American Dream intensifies through bone-chilling articulation and bloodthirsty ideologies until success and insanity are blissfully indistinguishable.
Only Lovers Left
Alive – A gorgeous soliloquy on humankind and the non-humans who mourn its
missteps, the otherworldly bond between Jarmusch’s two poetic bloodsuckers sings
with enviable class and conviction while the world around them echoes a bleaker
emptiness than the darkness of night.
Stand Clear of the Closing Doors – A fluid blend of family dynamics and an autistic boy's imaginative odyssey, the fantastical outlook of one spirited soul turns a multicultural metropolis into a living, breathing landscape where every encounter is a step into another world.
Under the Skin – A
sensory dreamscape from another galaxy, this dissonant symphony weaves a tapestry
of relationships between the individual and the world around it, sculpting a
perspective which recoils from the beauty of civilization and basks in its
macabre underside.
HONORARY MENTION
Stray Dogs
Blue Ruin
The Double
FIVE FAVORITE NON-NEW FILMS:
In the Fog – Submerged in the brutal consequences of uncertainty, this gripping collage of man’s actions and reactions resonates the miseries of war, a nightmare where truth and justice is beyond any range of sight.
A Short Film About Love – A soft-spoken discussion on the whirlwind of innocent desire and unorthodox obsession, these two opposing interpretations of reality entwine and alter the expectations of love.
Sidewalls – In a generation designed from technological
connection, wandering souls dance across a playground of surreal skyscrapers
and imagination, courting all architectures of life in the city-wide search for human
companionship and happiness.
Spring Breakers – Like a saturated warning on the American
Dream and the disillusioned youth who chase it into oblivion, this arsenal of dreamy
artistry joyrides out of established morality and into a spiritual paradise beyond the society which governs it.
Waydowntown – Transforming cubicles and commercial neurosis into
an urban funhouse, this witty ensemble romp transverses a modern-day
infrastructure energized with sex, drugs, suicide, and superheroes.
HONORARY MENTION
The Blue Angel
Stranger By The Lake
The Act of Killing
The Quiet Earth
Last Night
Mr. Nobody
How To Train Your
Dragon
Blue Caprice
After the Wedding
Mary and Max
FIVE LEAST FAVORITE OVERALL:
4:44 Last Day on Earth – Enveloped in the monotone melodrama of an uninspired apocalypse, floating voices and bodies recite end-of-time clichés while literal and figurative paintings drown the screen in a story without a surface.
Godzilla’s Revenge – Complete with real-time scenes attempting to portray slow motion, this laughable mess is the surgically-assembled concoction of all the remaining garbage left on the cutting room floor from a dozen other genres.
It’s a Disaster – Drowning
in relentless waves of sputtering banter, "quirky" conflicts are checked off the list and force-fed into the audience’s face, turning this hopeful disaster comedy
into a plain disaster.
Rampage: Capital Punishment – Political commentary and empty media criticism stick their hands
up the rump of cheap controversial violence and puts on a puppet show.
Thomas in Love –
With lifeless characters and uncreative concepts of technology, this voyeuristic
eyesore fails to boot past standard protocol.
