Seven Favorites:
1. Faust - An equal balance of art and storytelling that stands out from Svankmajer's other work, obligating me to place him in my top three favorite living filmmakers.
2. Last Year in Marienbad - A slow, dreamy experience that hypnotizes you with longing words and magic in every single shot.
3. The Secret in their Eyes - Manhunt, political corruption, crime thriller, forsaken romance, vengeful souls, and all forms of distorted justice. Also include one of my favorite long-takes ever (fluidly edited together) and a single line of dialogue that will evermore haunt me.
4. Das Experiment - This solid story endlessly twists its characters and shoves you off your sit with tension and suspense. I screamed at my screen at least twice.
5. El Alamein - The Line of Fire - This wartime survival story in the desert combines Kubrick-esque imagery with the Coens' episodic adventures.
6. Cemetary Man - Beneath this comical gothic-horror flick is something I can't quite describe, and its investigation of love's trap and life's meaning are very welcome.
7. The 25th Hour - Say what you will, but Spike Lee actually knew what he was doing here (and his dolly-machine actually worked effectively). After it's +2 hours were up, I was wishing for more.
Seven Least Favorites:
1. Metropia - I saw it in the theatre and found the projection to be very very dark. My interest in the CGI was short-lived and the plot seemed to run in circled searching for an exit.
2. The Collector - Granted my expectations were not high, but I found myself wishing that even the booby-traps (the very selling point of this film) would stop.
3. Empire of the Sun - I return to "expectations" which were justifiably moderate for a film of this magnitude. I found it torn between accurate war depictions and playful bedtime story.
4. Matrix Revolutions - No comment.
5. The Signal - This zombie-esque movie starts out with promise but takes an abrupt detour into awkward [for the audience] comedy, and it never revives.
6. Time Code - This movie was promoted as being "told in real time, without any edits." I found an edit. It was obvious. Finding that edit was the most exciting moment in this viewing.
7. Young Mr. Lincoln - I was hoping this film would hold a little bit more merit, but I found it to be a coming of age/courtroom drama where Fonda played Fonda and "Lincoln" could have been exempt from the title.
