2011 Media Diet (movies only)

At the end of every year, I post a list of the movies that I watched. It's fun to keep track of what I was watching at what point in time (Halloween season stands out). I also include a list of my favorite/least favorite seven flicks. Why seven? Five is too few and ten is too many.

All listed viewings are first time viewings only. That is because repeat viewings are almost never in full and the boundary between "watched" and "kinda watched" is weak.

Conversation is welcome.
Disputes are encouraged.
Whining is lame.

Seven Favorites
1. Tetro – A modern Greek drama with color, texture, mood, and all forms of aesthetic.
2. I Am Cuba –Internationally constructed propaganda that advances every stage of film making.
3. Enter the Void – Otherworldly and innovative in story and technique.
4. Sound of Noise – Simple and silly fun . . . . with musical terrorists.
5. We Need To Talk About Kevin – Hypnotizing visions of a suspenseful and suffocating trip through catastrophe.
6. Biutiful – A human tale of black market families and the supernatural forces hidden in the corners of your screen.
7. Fail-Safe – Lumet manipulates mind and soul through gripping camerawork and inhuman ideas.

Seven Least Favorites
1. The Ladykillers (2004) – Offensive and abnormally amateur, even for a remake, but especially for the Coens.
2. Splice – Underwhelming scope, approach, and portrayal of a progressively convenient creature and unrealistic humans.
3. New Day – Under-budgeted, under-written, under-shot, under-edited, etc.
4. The Sleeping Beauty – Experimental storytelling with lackluster experimentation and melodramatic storytelling.
5. Exam – Made entirely of filler that keeps one unsatisfied all the way to the ending’s unforgivably impulsive explanation.
6. The Killer Inside Me – Characters and their actions do not make sense and are never explained. This film just made me angry.
7. Spade County Massacre – Overabundance of ideas clashing with spontaneous pacing and sporadic acting.
